This is a blog about my back brace treatment experience during the 1970's, although I have lordosis, the treatment was almost the same.
I wore a Corset, a Milwaukee and a Kuehnegger back brace, as shown left below. In some countries the Milwaukee Brace is still in use, that surprises me.
Apart from the negleted lordosis, these braces look very effective. As seen on earlier posts the patients often tried to undermine the treatment by pushing the chinpad aside. Especially the last two braces seem quite effective in preventing these undesired actions.
They both helped the patient to maintain the stretched position. Of course it took some time the get accustomed, but once the patient was used to it, she would without any doubt appreciate the beneficial effect of the brace. Peter
The reason they were not used anymore was not because they were ineffective. The fashion wishes (hiding the brace) of the patients and their parent were at a certain moment in time more important than an effective treatment. Besides that, as can be seen and read on these pages, the effect of the brace was often undermined by patients and their parents who allowed loosening the brace, instead of watch for proper compliance. If the compliance would heave been higher, the statistics would even more benefit the brace treatment! Peter
I can imagine these braces took some time to grow accustomed to. But once the patient recognised it was for her own good, she should be happy and grateful she had a brace fitted for her special needs. And she was given the oppertunity to cure her scoliosis or kyphosis (better than to live her live with a hunchback).

they look awful and frightening - maybe they could as well be used as interesting bdsm toys, but not for medical treatment...
BeantwoordenVerwijderenwell, you say they look 'very effective' - hm, there must be a reason these kind of torture devices are not being used any longer
perhaps they are not that effective as they look?
